I'm not sure how technical you guys are wanting to get, but I love the idea of re-spawning pits. It makes for a much more enjoyable experience when I am hunting for something specific to be able to go to a pit and spend hours (or days) without having to mess around with many other mobs getting in the way. These pits also make me think more strategically about what gear I want to bring. If I am going to fight frosts, I need Ice Ele (which should go back to full anti-freeze). If I want to hunt Etts, I'll use my dm+ necky.

As technical as you want to get.
My issues with pits, is you never have enough, but they do provoke alot of pvp (kind of the point of it all right?!) Basicly, id hate to have only 1 map and 1 location to hunt a specific mob.(outside of map/zone/climate specific mobs)
We haven't gotten deep into this subject yet, but I would want more wandering things to kind of mask the pit feel, Middle Land for example, you can go to ET pit, but there's also quite a bit wandering the map, or even garden, before they free spawned in town, Uni's were in garden, but no specific span location.

The whole "mob pit" concept is horrible. The only good thing about it is that it provokes PvP like Goose said but the PvE aspect of it is ridiculous boring. I feel like HB needs to go into a more advanced direction by adding Quests and a good Partying/Grouping PvE concept rather than the same old boring pit hunting for hours and days...

There is something therapeutic about killing in a pit. It's along the same lines as popping bubble wrap, but the bubbles fill back up and sometimes drop things.
